How to Install WordPress Theme -Step by Step Guide for Beginner

WordPress is one of the most popular website-building platforms. Here I will share step-by-step instructions on how to install a WordPress themes for beginners.

WordPress themes play a critical role in your website. They create the look and feel of your website in just a few clicks, with no coding required. There are thousands of free themes in the WordPress directory.

Let’s get started to install a WordPress theme:

First Method: Install a theme from the WordPress theme directory

WordPress.org themes directory has thousands of free themes. If you’re looking to install a free WordPress theme. It’s the easiest way to install a theme to your WordPress site.

By default when you install WordPress on your hosting, you will get the Twenty Nineteen theme on your site. WordPress also allows you to choose themes from their official theme directory.

To install a WordPress theme

At first, you need to login into your WordPress admin area. Go to the Appearance and select the Themes page and click on the Add New button. You’ll see a screen like an image below.

On the next screen, you will see all of the available featured themes from the WordPress official theme directory.

You can check Popular themes and the latest themes by clicking on Popular and Latest. You can use Feature Filter to find your desired WordPress theme.

If you have any desired WordPress theme, you can also search for the specific WordPress theme with specific features using the Search option.

After finding your desired WordPress theme, click on the Details & Preview or Preview to learn more about the WordPress theme.

 

When you decided on a theme you like, click on the Install button. After installing the theme, it’s time to activate your WordPress theme. Click on the Activate button.

Now you have successfully installed and activated your WordPress theme. You can also click on Live Preview to see how the new theme looks on your website.

Your theme may ask you to install the recommended plugins, download demo data, or review settings. You can start setting up your theme by clicking on the Customize button.

Second Method: Install WordPress theme by using the Upload Method

The first method allows you to install free themes that are available in the WordPress theme directory.

If you want to install a premium WordPress theme. You also have the option of purchasing or downloading from a third-party website like ThemeForest, StudioPress, Elegant Themes, Themify, etc.

After downloading a theme from a third-party website you will get a .zip file.

To install a WordPress theme

At first, you need to login into your WordPress admin area. Go to the Appearance »  Themes page and click on the Add New button. You’ll see a screen like an image below.

This will take you to the add new theme page showing featured free themes. Since you already have the theme you want to install, go ahead and click on the Upload Theme button at the top.

The page will be displaying a box where you can select and upload your theme.

Click on the Choose File button and navigate to the appropriate file on your computer, which you downloaded earlier.

Select the file and click on the Install Now button.

Once your theme is installed, you will see a success message along with the button to activate and preview the theme.

Click on the Activate link, and you have successfully installed and activated your WordPress theme.

Third Method: Installing a WordPress theme using cPanel

If you want to install a WordPress theme manually then you can use cPanel in your hosting account.

At first, you need to log in cPanel dashboard and go to the File Manager.

Click on the public_html file from the left-hand sidebar. The public_html directory consists of all of your website’s files and folders.

You can easily see the wp-content folder where all of your site’s content is available, open this folder. You can see the media files, themes, and plugins folder.

If you are going to install a WordPress theme, click on the Themes folder. You can see all the active and non-active WordPress themes present on your site currently.

To install a new theme you have to upload the .zip file, which you got after buying the theme from the third-party company.

Go to the top navigation bar, click on the Upload button. Now it’s time to upload your WordPress theme in zip format.

A new screen opens, where you can see a button to select the file from your computer.

Click on the Select File button and navigate to the appropriate file on your computer, which you downloaded earlier.

Depending on the size of the theme and your internet speed, the uploading process gets completed.

Go back to the previous directory and you can see the .zip file. Select the .zip file right-click your mouse and choose the Extract option.

A popup appears to show you the path of the directory, where you are going to extract the file. If you upload the theme somewhere else, you can fill in the public_html/wp-content/themes path to send the theme name folder here.

Now you can see another popup showing the extraction process.

After ending the extraction process, click on the Close button.

Activate the theme

You can see a folder with the theme’s name. To activate your theme, you need to use the WordPress admin panel.

Go to the Appearance »  Themes and you can see your uploaded theme is available here. Click on the Activate button.

Your uploaded theme is successfully installed and activated now.

Fourth Method: Installing WordPress theme in cPanel using FTP

First, you need to download the theme .zip file from a third-party company.

After that, you need to unzip the file. This will create a new folder with the theme’s name on your computer.

Now you are ready to upload them to your website.

To do this, you’ll need to connect to your website/WordPress hosting account using an FTP client.

Once connected, here you need to look for the public_html folder, which is your root folder. You need to open the wp-content then themes folder. This theme folder contains all themes, which are currently installed on your website.

Select your unzipped theme folder from your computer and upload it to your website.

Once you have uploaded and installed the theme on your website using FTP. To activate the theme go to your WordPress dashboard.

Click on the Appearance » Themes and you can see your uploaded theme is listed here. Simply click on the Activate button.

Your uploaded theme is successfully installed and activated now.
